Here are some interesting finds on UI/UX of the week!

1.

Soft Skills Driving Value in Uncertain Times. Interesting article hailing from Fast Company on the topic of Soft Skills being sought after by Hiring Managers in this new environment, we all find ourselves in. These are skills that cross beyond technology driven jobs, these are essentially applicable to any candidate on the market right now, trying to make an impression and advance to another phase in their career paths. The article highlights skills such as Emotional Intelligence, Resilience, Empathy, Initiative, Tenacity, to name but a few. Worth reading and reflecting upon, since it also features some particular insights from actual hiring managers. Highlight of the article includes:

“This pandemic has resulted in the upending of entire industries, as well as certain businesses facing tremendous volatility due to changes in consumer behaviors, spending habits, and client demands. Working face-to-face with colleagues in a central, physical workspace has quickly shifted to working remotely across distributed workforces. Therefore, candidates need to be able to adapt to changes in how they work and the tasks they are required to perform. Therese Hightower, a senior director of talent acquisition at Avalara, says its hiring managers assess adaptability by asking candidates how they reacted when project requirements or desired outcomes changed.”

2.

Thorough Guide to HTML Email. Smashing Magazine continues to provide insightful and thoroughly engaging and detailed articles. This time around, author Vitaly Friedman created a compelling article where there’s a vast array of resources on how to successfully build compelling emails that resonate, are multi-platform agnostic and generally, fulfill the goals that Organizations push for when sending them. The article lists Templates, Online Resources to learn more about coding and best practices, Mailto selection prompts, and the list goes on. Well worth taking the time to explore. Highlight of the article includes:

“Coding clean, responsive emails that provide a solid experience in all popular email clients can be a time-consuming challenge. HEML is here to change that. The open-source markup language gives you the native power of HTML without having to deal with all of the email quirks. There are no special rules or styling paradigms to master, so if you know HTML and CSS, you are ready to start.”

Design Leaders Salaries in 2021. Again, not a typical highlight from this newsletter, but nonetheless well worth reading. This article and the report that sustains it, is driven by data compiled by Invision across Design Leaders all over the world. It sheds light on career path and progression, and how compensation moves along with these same professionals as they gain expertise in their field. For professionals of different experience levels, this is worth diving into, and understanding the disparities that still exist and where they exist. Well worth a read. Highlight of the article includes:

“With remote work’s rise over the past year, companies can now recruit design talent from anywhere in the world. This monumental shift in hiring norms raises novel questions: Do companies pay enough to compete for talent in a global market? Do companies compensate their best design leaders well enough to stay? Based upon feedback from the Design Leadership Forum, a members-only group of more than 3,200 design leaders, InVision set out to find an answer. They asked 600 global design leaders across 38 industries to disclose their real salary numbers, and, after analysis, found that the 2021 average design leader base salary is $168,000. Their findings are published in a new report, which also analyzes the data by industry, gender, race, operating model (remote/co-located/etc), and happiness.”
