UI/UX Articles and Interesting Tidbits of the Week

Here are some interesting finds on UI/UX of the week!
Last Newsletter for 2023, including some highlights of the year.
1.
The Qualitative Research Process. Great article from the Dovetail blog and author Jess Nichols on the topic of Qualitative Research. The article is a thorough document attesting to the phases researchers go through (or should go through), when tackling a qualitative research endeavor. It includes aspects such as What to Research, How to Perform the Research, Alignment, Preparation, Execution, Synthesis, Outputs and Follow ups. It’s an article that provides good recommendations on how to tackle this type of studies, and one well worth reading through. Highlight of the article includes:
“Once a researcher has determined what they will be researching and how they will research it, they will generally write up a research plan that includes additional information about the research goals, participant scope, timelines, and dependencies. The plan is typically either a document or presentation shared with stakeholders depending on the company and how they work. After the research plan is complete, researchers will share the plan for feedback and input from their stakeholders to ensure that the stakeholders have the right expectations going into the research. Stakeholders may ask for additional question topics to be added, ensure that research will be executed against specific timelines, or provide recommendations on how the study will help make product decisions.”

The Perfect Design Process. Worth revisiting this article from Vitaly Friedman for The Smashing Magazine, on the topic of Design Processes, which ones to adopt and how to shape them into the particular situations Designers find themselves in.
A Brief History of VR and AR. A great overview of both VR and AR performed by TechCrunch and author Brian Heater. The article traces the commencement of these technologies back to 1962 and Morton Helig’s patent, and portrays the evolution they’ve experienced since then.
Survey of Recently Laid-Off Workers. Julia Pollak wrote this article in March of 2023, looking back at what happened in 2022. Layoffs then, particularly in technology were occurring at a dramatic pace, cooled off, and picked up once again 9 months later. Worth reading through.

Key Takeaways from Difficult Experiences. I wrote 18 articles this year, a few less than I expected, but on topics that I had wanted to address for quite some time. The article I’m choosing to highlight seems to have resonated with a few readers and I enjoyed having discussions on this topic with my own team and other colleagues in the field. Hope this continues to be a good resource for Designers.
